Garden lights at sunset, the pond pump on a schedule, fairy lights off automatically: smart outdoor plugs bring convenience outside.

Protection rating: why IP44 is the minimum

Outdoors, a plug has to withstand rain, splashing water and dust. The degree of protection is given by the IP code: the first digit stands for protection against solid objects, the second for water. IP44 means protection against splashing water from all directions and is standard for covered or partially sheltered areas. Higher ratings such as IP65 additionally protect against water jets.

The rating only applies if plugs and flaps are closed properly. An indoor plug adapter in an outdoor socket undermines the protection – outdoors, use only models built for the purpose. Outdoor sockets should also be protected by a residual current device (RCD), which is mandatory for newer installations in Germany.

Wireless range in the garden

The biggest hurdle outdoors is often the connection. House walls, windows with heat-insulating coatings and distance weaken Wi-Fi considerably. Before buying, use your smartphone to check how well your Wi-Fi reaches the planned spot. Zigbee or DECT models can have advantages if another device near a window acts as a relay.

  • Wi-Fi: simple, but range-dependent – you may need a repeater.
  • Zigbee: benefits from routers in the house, needs a gateway.
  • DECT: long range, requires a compatible base station such as a FRITZ!Box.

Typical uses

Popular uses are schedules based on sunrise and sunset for path lighting and fairy lights, controlled run times for pond and fountain pumps, or switching off the Christmas decorations at midnight. With energy monitoring you can also tell whether a pump is clogged or drawing unexpectedly high power.

Watch the maximum load: hedge trimmers, pressure washers or patio heaters need a 16 A rating. And for permanent installations, a fixed outdoor socket fitted by a qualified electrician is the safer choice.

Energy monitoring outdoors too

Some outdoor plugs also measure consumption. That's handy for checking the run time of pond pumps, lighting or heating cables, and helps you spot unexpectedly high values early. With such models, check how readings are displayed in the app and make sure the protection rating is maintained with the appliance plugged in.
